What is intensive outpatient? How does it help in recovery? Learn how intensive outpatient programs work, the methods offered in IOP, and how South Coast can help you create long-lasting change in your life.

Following partial hospitalization, an intensive outpatient program (IOP) provides continuing care services for those in recovery from substance use disorders. As a form of outpatient treatment, IOP services offer extra support as patients work on their recovery goals both in and outside of a rehabilitation center.

Compared to programs that offer higher levels of care, an IOP program requires the least amount of attendance within a facility setting. For this reason, intensive outpatient benefits people who already have a strong foundation of healthy skills and routines in recovery. As you spend more time reintegrating back into daily life, IOP extends your access to clinical services and peer support to help you maintain long-term recovery during and after intensive outpatient.

Intensive Outpatient Programs

An intensive outpatient program (IOP) is a form of addiction treatment that is an option for those who do not need residential treatment but may still need 24/7 care. IOP treatment helps individuals struggling with drug and alcohol use disorders to overcome their addiction. Each program meets the specific needs of each person. During an IOP, individuals receive regular treatments such as individual therapy, group therapy, medication management, and skills training that equip them to build more constructive behaviors and habits. For instance, group sessions emphasize job readiness, life skills, and relapse management training to help you maintain long-term recovery in intensive outpatient.

Additionally, IOPs also offer educational opportunities to learn about the causes and complications of substance use and abuse. Participants can expect to have an experienced clinical staff working with them through every step of their recovery journey, providing extensive support and guidance while they work toward sobriety and a healthier lifestyle.

We are open 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, 365 days per year.

Who Can Benefit From Intensive Outpatient?

An intensive outpatient program is ideal for patients who are transitioning out of higher levels of care such as partial hospitalization. Often, these programs are also available to patients who already have a foundation of support and sobriety in their life. Designed to be a flexible level of care, IOP allows you the freedom you need to maintain your sobriety while also providing accountability and guidance. As an intensive program that provides structure and support in recovery while you navigate the responsibilities found in everyday life.

Intensive outpatient treatment for substance abuse benefits patients who need support within a lower level of care. Once you have developed the coping skills for addiction recovery, IOP provides continuing care services in a less structured environment that will help you remain accountable as you take deliberate steps in your recovery journey.

What To Expect During Intensive Outpatient?

Intensive outpatient substance abuse treatment programs are for people in early recovery to incorporate more support and resources for recovery. During these programs, patients are provided more personal freedoms and greater flexibility in treatment schedules. IOP programs offer access to supportive services and amenities such as recreational activities, individual and group counseling, substance abuse education, and support groups. IOP programs allow patients to take advantage of many different therapy options and educational groups that help them build life skills that support successful recovery outcomes following treatment.

With a deep understanding of individuals’ struggles in early recovery, clinicians help you strengthen your resiliency for long-term success. For this reason, IOP programs can help you gain the insight, resources, and connections you need to create lasting change.

If you or someone you know is considering IOP treatment for substance abuse, then it’s important to understand how these programs aid in recovery maintenance so that you can make an informed decision about your journey to lifelong recovery.

Intensive Outpatient Treatment Services

Following PHP, our intensive outpatient program (IOP) provides treatment services for those in recovery from substance use disorders. During intensive outpatient, patients continue to work on their recovery goals in intensive therapy sessions. Knowing that recovery is a process, not an event, these ongoing support services help to ensure your success. This includes relapse prevention planning, goal setting and achievement, life skill building, and more.

Like partial hospitalization, patients in IOP receive continuing care services and support while recovering outside of residential facilities. IOP treatment programs allow providers to offer comprehensive aftercare services within a less restrictive program for substance abuse. As a final step of treatment, intensive outpatient treatment helps address and deter any potential return to alcohol or drug use. To encourage your successful reintegration within the community, IOPs can also provide you with resources, support networks, and skills to manage the everyday stresses that most often cause a relapse into drug or alcohol abuse.

Intensive outpatient services may include:

During intensive outpatient, you can receive continuing care services and support for those who are ready to transition out of a partial hospitalization program. Designed to address and prevent any potential return to alcohol or drug use, IOP assists you in maintaining your sobriety at home or in sober living.

Our IOP services assist you and your peers in developing a strong foundation for sustained recovery. For this reason, you can expect a comprehensive approach that involves medical exams, group therapy, individual counseling sessions, relapse prevention workshops, and involvement from family members whenever possible.

Therapy Services in Intensive Outpatient Programs

An intensive outpatient program provides you with the support and guidance you need to continue moving forward in life. In entering IOP, you will gain access to a wide range of research-based therapies that can help address any psychological, emotional, and behavioral issues that may trigger addiction.

Intensive therapies in IOP treatment may include:

As you progress through treatment, you can apply the insights you’ve gained to begin living a healthy and balanced life outside of our facility. In general, IOP counseling sessions help you build skills for use in all areas of your life. That includes work, relationships, and personal growth.

During individual therapy, you and your therapist can work together to define support systems, local resources, and skills to prevent relapse. You can also develop healthier coping strategies for stress management and emotional regulation with our experienced counselors.

In group therapy, you can also focus on honing your relapse prevention plan. During relapse prevention groups, you try things like problem-solving activities with peers who understand your situation. Many IOPs also offer access to a range of holistic services, such as relaxation techniques and self-care practices, to find inner peace.

Intensive Mental Health Outpatient Program

Mental Health Services for Co-Occurring Disorders

Outpatient treatment often provides dual diagnosis services, which can assist in the treatment of any co-occurring disorders that contribute to addiction. Within dual-diagnosis addiction treatment, treatment providers offer a range of research-based practices to treat your mental health and substance abuse.

Likewise, they tailor treatment plans to each person’s specific circumstances and provide personalized care that focuses on their needs and goals. For this reason, medical professionals work with you to determine the presence of any co-occurring mental health diagnoses. Through thorough assessments, licensed physicians may also provide medication management services for those in need.

Along with psychiatric medications, treatment professionals also assist patients in establishing a sense of stability in recovery. To do so, IOP staff help patients develop skills that will lead them through recovery at their own pace in an environment that encourages open communication and trust.

Frequently Asked Questions
About Intensive Outpatient

It’s normal to have questions and concerns before starting rehab. Here are the most frequently asked questions about intensive outpatient programs:

What Is Outpatient vs Inpatient?

Unlike a residential program, IOP is a lower level of care that can accommodate those with particularly busy lifestyles. During intensive outpatient, you can expect to take part in various therapeutic activities such as counseling and educational classes. However, the frequency of required sessions is significantly lower than inpatient treatment to allow patients more time to focus on their reintegration into daily life.

What Is IOP vs PHP?

Alongside PHP, IOP treatment offers comprehensive aftercare services. Similar to partial hospitalization, patients in IOP receive continuing care services and support while recovering outside of an inpatient facility. Unlike PHP, however, IOP services are less restrictive and provide more time for patients to focus on their life responsibilities outside of treatment.

How Long Are IOP Programs?

As a step-down level of care, intensive outpatient programs can run at varying lengths depending on the provider and the patient’s treatment needs. With that being said, most IOP programs occur or the course of a month or longer to ensure patients require the support they need while re-integrating into everyday activities.

How Often Do I Go To IOP?

Typically, there are two levels of intensive outpatient care, IOP 5 and IOP 3. IOP 5 means you will attend 5 IOP groups/week, IOP 3 means you will attend 3 IOP groups/week.

IOP 5 is better for someone who needs a bit more structure and support, or is stepping into IOP from a partial-hospitalization or inpatient program. IOP 3 is better for individuals who are balancing life with their recovery, and may have a part or full-time job, a family, or other obligations that limit their schedule.

How Long Are IOP Groups?

Group therapy sessions in IOP usually last from 1-1.5 hours. Individual therapy sessions can also count as your clinical hours, toward your IOP clinical requirements. Individual therapy sessions last for one hour.

What Amenities Are Included During IOP?

During IOP, patients typically have access to amenities such as recreational activities, individual and group counseling, and access to substance abuse education classes and support groups.

What Happens Once I Complete IOP?

After completing an intensive outpatient program, patients may join a traditional outpatient program, move into a sober living home, or continuing participating in local recovery meetings to help them maintain their sobriety surrounded by community support.

Do You Recommend Any Outpatient Centers In California?

As a quality substance abuse treatment provider, we are extremely fastidious when it comes to personally vetting local outpatient treatment programs for patients who graduate from our higher levels of care. This is because we can only speak to the quality of our program and offerings with utmost certainty.

With that being said, we conduct meticulous research into the program details and service offerings prior to recommending any outpatient centers to our patients who request additional aftercare options.

If you prefer to continue your immersion within our local recovery community, you can speak with your case manager about sober living options. Our ties within the community make it easy to find you housing arrangements with one of our preferred providers for sober living.
