Addiction and Mental Health Resources for the LGBTQ+ Community

The LGBTQ Community and Substance Abuse

Members of the LGBTQ community can be at a higher risk of struggling with substance abuse. There are several reasons for this, primarily due to the fact that this is a minority community. This means that they may experience discrimination, rejection, and violence more regularly than the general population.

This can lead to chronic stress, increasing the risk that they may turn to substances to cope. Members of the LGBTQ community may also be more prone to feelings of isolation and loneliness. This is particularly true if they have not come out or live in unsupportive communities.

A lack of social support and acceptance can make it difficult to cope with stress and challenges in a healthy way. As a result, this makes LQBTQ people more prone to mental health problems and, consequently, substance abuse.

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, members of the LGBTQ community were two to three times more likely to try illegal drugs other than marijuana in the past year. Also, 88% of LGBTQ young adults over the age of 21 surveyed admitted to using alcohol in the past year.

The LGBTQ Community and Mental Health

Like with substance abuse, the LGBTQ community faces a higher risk of mental health challenges. This is due to several factors, including regular exposure to discrimination and negative stigma.

Members of this community often experience prejudice and social rejection based on their sexual orientation or gender identity. This can lead to feelings of isolation, shame, and anxiety without support.

Dealing with the chronic stress that comes from being marginalized and isolated can take a serious toll on one’s mental health. Challenges like coming out to family and friends, housing and employment discrimination, and violence can make this even more difficult. 24% of LGBTQ young people surveyed reported experiencing threats and physical violence due to their sexual orientation.

There is also the fact that many LGBTQ members lack access to affirming care. This can make it difficult to feel comfortable in one’s own body. Over time, this can take a serious toll on their mental well-being. According to The Trevor Project, young adult members of the LGBTQ community were four times more likely to attempt suicide than their heterosexual peers.
